Getting the Boot!

“We’ve had to boot a few folks,” admitted Murray, recalling the one-night stand of an FBI agent who crashed into a player so hard the skater’s helmet and glasses broke. “He was a cop and he was out there committing assault,” he recalled indignantly.

Murray grew up playing hockey jerseys in Canada, but never played on a varsity team. It was always just for the fun of it. Same with Henkart, who was reared in Port Washington, N.Y., on Long Island, and played “whenever it got cold enough for pickup games. There’s an excitement to nhl jerseys that you can’t replace with anything else,” he said.

Multi-County Coallition Formed

Rural Nevada has unique challenges in developing community Drug Treatment Centers among the Spanish-speaking population. Because many of the Hispanic residents are migrant workers, they are often moving throughout the area. Therefore, Carson City, Lyon, Storey, and Douglas Counties have joined together to develop a multicounty Drug Treatment Center. There is now cross coordination between counties, and Hispanic leaders are engaged in several areas, including the creation of continuity between service delivery systems in each community.

The mentoring project in Nevada is successfully engaging a population that is at risk and traditionally underserved. Through their efforts, five communities are now building Drug Treatment Centers, assessing their needs and resources, and developing prevention plans that will ultimately change the community environment and potentially save lives.
